Authorities in Maui are investigating a tragic ocean incident that left one woman dead and another hospitalized in critical condition after both were pulled unresponsive from the water at Koki Beach in Hāna.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 10:16 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, following reports that two individuals were in distress in the ocean. According to the Maui Fire Department, one person had already been brought to shore unresponsive, while another remained in the water.
Bystanders immediately began CPR on the individual pulled from the water before first responders arrived. In a swift and courageous effort, an off-duty firefighter used a surfboard to reach the second victim and bring her back to shore.
Upon arrival, firefighters continued life-saving measures, administering CPR to both individuals. Despite their efforts, a 56-year-old woman from California was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, a 53-year-old woman from Texas, regained a pulse after resuscitation efforts and was airlifted to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
Officials reported that ocean conditions at the time included small waves and light chop, though the circumstances leading to the incident remain under investigation.
The tragedy has prompted renewed reminders from authorities for beachgoers to exercise caution, remain aware of ocean conditions, and swim in designated areas with lifeguard supervision whenever possible.
Further details are expected as officials continue to review the incident.
